Questioning whether or not you’re getting sick? If you’ve been around someone who’s sick or you’re hearing about people who are, you might find yourself asking “are I or aren’t I?” at the slightest sensation in your throat.

Some good news! We have a simple yet effective home remedy video for use in preventing bacteria and viruses from settling in when you first start to feel symptoms.

Chinese medicine uses categories such as “wind-cold” and “wind-heat” to classify different types of colds and flus. The symptoms listed below are typical of a “wind-cold invasion”, which tends to occur during the initial stages of an upper respiratory infection.

  • Feeling unusually chilled
  • Slightly scratchy throat
  • Low grade fever (under 100 degrees)
  • Headache
  • Joint pain
  • Stuffy or runny nose with clear or white mucus
  • Cough with phlegm that is clear or white

The key is to act quickly in order to nip “wind-cold” in the bud. The following soup is easy to make with ingredients that you might already have at home.

  • 1 green onion, white portion, sliced thinly
  • 1 clove of garlic, sliced thinly
  • 1-2 thin slices of fresh ginger, unpeeled
  • 1 to 1.5 cups of water or low-sodium vegetable broth

Bring the broth to a boil. Add the green onion, garlic and ginger and simmer on low for 15 minutes. Drink it while it’s hot and wrap up in something warm to facilitate a light sweat.

The green onions have a warming property to them and promote a light sweat, which helps expel the “cold” from your body. Ginger has similar abilities, and all three foods are known to be anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-inflammatory.

If your symptoms evolve into a stronger fever with sweating, cough with yellow phlegm, cough with heavy breathing, stuffy nose with yellow mucus, a swollen/dry throat, or increased thirst, you’ve passed the point of wind-cold and are now in the wind-heat territory and the above soup is not for you!

A Costly Mistake (and how to avoid it)

I remember my very first allergy attack. I was 11 years old and playing around with a potpourri ball in my bedroom, the kind that you stick in a dresser drawer to keep socks from smelling like….well, socks. I took a big whiff of that potpourri and then sneezed about...
